The PTR Valve what is it?

As water heats up in your storage hot water heater it expands, when it does this the pressure in the tank increases. This little valve is the pressure and temperature relief valve or PTR valve for short. When the pressure is too much this valve acts as a fail safe to stop the water tank from exploding. The seat of this valve opens up to allow water to release and the pressure to the tank is stabalised. It will also open if the thermostat on the heater is faulting and relieve the heater pressure. in most cases these valves should be changed about every 5 years and the tab should be pulled every 6 to 12 months to avoid sticking.

If however you have an old valve or water containing debris these valves can fail to seat and run consistently.

This becomes a problem as you are not just wasting the water that it is losing but as the hot water leaves the tank it is replaced by cold water reducing the temperature of the tank and telling the tank to begin heating again. imagine having a kettle constantly going and you get the idea when you get your next electricity bill!

just a simple check to see if the valve is running can save you $$$$ in the future.
